Firefly LiFi Demonstrates Commercially Available and ITU G.vlc Standard Recommendation Compliant LiFi Solutions at the Broadband World Forum
The ITU G.vlc Standard for Visible Light Communications and LiFi is expected to accelerate the deployment of LiFi systems worldwide.
Berlin, Germany (Broadband World Forum) – October 23, 2018: Firefly LiFi, a manufacturer of Visible Light Communications (VLC) LiFi products, announced that its SecureLink LiFi solutions are compliant with the latest draft of the ITU G.9991 (or “G.vlc”) Standard Recommendation. This latest draft of the G.vlc Recommendation was coordinated by the International Telecommunication Union Telecommunication Sector (ITU-T), whose mission is to ensure the efficient and timely production of standards covering all fields of telecommunications on a worldwide basis. LiFi is one of the hottest new technologies emerging in the electronics industry, since the technology utilizes light to transmit data instead of radio frequency methods, such as WiFi. Firefly LiFi made the announcement at the Broadband World Forum tradeshow in Berlin, Germany, where it is displaying the company’s SecureLink LiFi solutions with Teleconnect GmbH (booth C112; Hall 22a). Firefly LiFi is owned by Teleconnect and LightPointe Communications, Inc., the leader in outdoor point-to-point backhaul solutions.
“We’re excited to announce that our LiFi products adhere to the pending G.vlc Standard, as such standards enable a robust ecosystem of products that can work together—which enhances end-user satisfaction and can lead to the creation of ubiquitous, mass-market technology adoption,” said Dr. Heinz Willebrand, CEO of Firefly LiFi, and an inductee into EE Times list of Forty Innovators Building the Foundation of the Next-Gen Electronics Industry. “The final G.vlc Standard is expected at the end of the year or early 2019. History has clearly shown that having a standard in place is very important when it comes to market acceptance and new technology adoption. Customers that deploy products that are based on international standards avoid the risks associated with deploying proprietary solutions, which are susceptible to not being part of a larger ecosystem. For future-proof enterprise and government wireless network applications—requiring Gigabit capacity, extreme data security over encrypted light transmission, and flexible deployment in both human and machine to machine (M2M) network scenarios—Firefly LiFi is the clear choice in LiFi and VLC connectivity.”
Firefly LiFi’s SecureLink is powered by G.hn technology from MaxLinear, a leading provider of radio frequency (RF), analog, and mixed-signal integrated circuits for the connected home, wired and wireless infrastructure, and industrial and multimarket applications.
“SecureLink ceiling-mounted access points transmit to tabletop units using light instead of radio frequency WiFi transmission, which is prone to eavesdropping, interference, and RF congestion,” continued Dr. Willebrand. “This creates a much more secure wireless network ideal for applications such as corporate and government conference rooms—as well as for applications in which data transmission speed and unsurpassed signal security are critical. In addition to presenting our indoor SecureLink solutions at the Broadband World Forum, we are also presenting our outdoor system for high speed point-to-point wireless connectivity. The outdoor system is for enterprises, metro campus building connectivity, 5G LTE short-haul backhaul for Smart City networks, Small Cell applications, and Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISP). Firefly Wireless Networks demonstriert weltweit schnellste und kommerziell verfügbare LiFi-Netzwerklösung auf dem Broadband World Forum
Visible Light Communications basierende LiFi-Lösung von Firefly bietet mehr als 10-mal schnellere Netzwerkverbindung als Wettbewerber.
Berlin, 24.

New Company, Firefly Wireless Networks, is Launched to Target Multi-Billion Dollar Visible Light Communications and LiFi Market, Backed by Berg and Berg Enterprises, LightPointe, and Teleconnect
Firefly emerges from two years of “stealth mode,” with patents and first products.
San Diego CA – June 28, 2016: A new company, Firefly Wireless Networks LCC, announced that it has launched after two years in “stealth mode” and is targeting the emerging hot technology area known as Visible Light Communications and LiFi, or Light Fidelity. The company is owned by LightPointe Communications, the number one manufacturer of long range hybrid outdoor wireless backhaul solutions, Berg and Berg Enterprises, a multi-billion dollar venture capital firm, and Teleconnect GmbH, a telecommunications engineering company. Firefly Wireless Networks’ engineers have already received patents in the Visible Light Communications (VLC) sector, and have developed initial products for highly secure data communications utilizing light, rather than WiFi and other radio frequency transmission technologies. VLC and LiFi technologies have recently gained attention as an alternative to WiFi and such RF communications methods, since WiFi and RF spectrum have become congested and are prone to interference and reliability issues. In addition, by using light spectrum—which is up to 10,000 times more plentiful than radio frequency spectrum— communications are virtually impossible to intercept, thus avoiding cyber security and eavesdropping threats. This makes VLC ideal for sensitive government and commercial networks, as well as mass market implementations in which low cost connectivity is required between devices.
“After operating discreetly in stealth mode for two years, we are excited to finally announce Firefly Wireless Networks,” said Dr. Heinz Willebrand, who is serving as CEO of Firefly, and also continues to serve as CEO of LightPointe. “Firefly was created to focus on what is one of the hottest technology growth sectors on the horizon, Visible Light Communications, which due to the proliferation of LED lighting and LED use in commercial and residential devices, is expected to be a multi-billion dollar industry in the coming years. VLC technologies are one of the communication methods which the so-called Internet of Things will use to connect millions of consumer electronics and Machine to Machine (M2M) devices cost effectively, and without the use of scarce radio frequency spectrum.”
Firefly Wireless Networks has launched its website, www.FireflyWirelessNetworks.com, or www.VLC.Solutions, which describes many applications for Visible Light Communications and LiFi technologies.
Applications for VLC and LiFi include:
Secure network access (replacement or augmentation of WiFi)
Factory automation and communications
Consumer Electronics
Internet of Things (IoT)
Hospitals and medical communications
Vehicles (vehicle charging and communications systems, vehicle to vehicle / V2V, vehicle to roadside / V2R, and in-vehicle communications)

Airport terminals (avoidance of radio frequency interference with sensitive equipment)
Train stations
Point of Sale (POS) (signage and location-based consumer applications)
Nuclear and Public Utilities
Underwater applications
“Our first product emerged from research and development a few months ago, has completed thorough testing, and is awaiting FCC approval,” said Andreas Bluschke, chief technology officer of Firefly Wireless Networks, who also serves as managing director of Teleconnect. “The Office SecureLink™ is a highly secure indoor Ethernet communication bridge for point to point, and point to multi-point connectivity, using red, green, blue, or invisible infrared light. The access point and client, or subscriber units, can be installed in conference rooms, offices, and other indoor environments where the utmost in security is desired while avoiding WiFi congestion and signal security issues.”
According to some research reports, the market for Visible Light Communications could reach over US$100 billion by 2024, as the Internet connects millions of devices around the world autonomously and seamlessly.

Adherence to HIPPA regulations also makes LightPointe’s radios ideal for other sensitive applications, such as transmitting financial, personal identity, and monetary transactions which require optimum security and avoidance of eavesdropping and cybersecurity issues.
“As a repeat customer of LightPointe, we were already confident in their products and support,” said Jon McAllister, IT network engineer for St. Helena Hospital Clear Lake. “My objective was to quickly deploy a point to point link flexible enough to handle VoIP, large medical imaging files with jumbo frames, numerous hospital software applications, and also securely transmit patient records while adhering to HIPPA regulations. After reviewing various wired, fiber, and wireless alternatives, it became clear that LightPointe’s AireLink 60 provided the best features and security for our application, including nine levels of modulation which ensures up to 99.999% network availability. And by deploying a license-free 60 GHz wireless bridge, we avoided the costs and infrastructure damage and repairs associated with trenching for fiber, and were able to connect our buildings within thirty days with a product that works great 24-7 without any human intervention. And the hospital saves money, since there aren’t recurring monthly leased-line fees or regulatory licenses. The system pays for itself over time, which is great for both our bottom line and our patients.”

LightPointe Investment in Visible Light Communications Pays Off as Company Backs Firefly Wireless Networks to Target Multi-Billion Dollar Visible Light Communications and LiFi Market
Firefly emerges from two years of “stealth mode,” with patents and first products.
San Diego CA and Shangai, China (GSMA Mobile World Congress show) – June 29, 2016: LightPointe Communications, Inc., which is the dominant manufacturer of long range outdoor point to point wireless bridges using radio frequency and laser technology, announced that it has formed and co-owns a new company aimed at the emerging hot tech sector referred to as Visible Light Communications and LiFi, orLight Fidelity. The new company, Firefly Wireless Networks LCC, has launched after two years in “stealth mode,” with LightPointe’s R&D labs in San Diego, California serving as the technology incubator. Firefly is owned by LightPointe Communications, the number one manufacturer of hybrid 60 GHz radios, 80 GHz radios, and Free Space Optics solutions, Berg and Berg Enterprises, a multi-billion dollar venture capital firm, and Teleconnect GmbH, a telecommunications engineering company.
Heinz Willebrand, who is serving as CEO of Firefly, and also continues to serve as Founder and CEO of LightPointe. “LightPointe invested resources and created Firefly to focus on what is one of the hottest technology growth sectors on the horizon, Visible Light Communications, which due to the proliferation of LED lighting and LED use in commercial and residential devices, is expected to be a multi-billion dollar industry in the coming years. VLC technologies are one of the communication methods which the so-called Internet of Things will use to connect millions of consumer electronics and Machine to Machine (M2M) devices cost effectively, and without the use of scarce radio frequency spectrum. LightPointe’s participation and co-ownership of Firefly Wireless Networks means that LightPointe is positioned as the only company with end-to-end solutions for both indoor and outdoor high capacity wireless bridges using the best technologies for the application—radio frequency, Visible Light Communications, and Free Space Optics laser bridges. No other company comes close to our broad portfolio of affordable indoor and outdoor wireless bridges.”
Aircraft (broadband media and data transmissions to increase throughput, while reducing aircraft wiring/weight and avoid interference with aircraft electronics)
The announcement on Firefly Wireless Networks was made at GSMA World Congress Shanghai, and SmartGigabit Bay Area.
